DJ Caterina has a new home -- visit me at Audio Rumble.

The Caterina Escape began as a way to share my college radio show playlist at Radio UTD at The University of Texas at Dallas. It evolved into commentary on pop culture, celebrity gossip and music news. However, I graduate in December with a communications degree and it's time I laid this escape to rest.

But now to worry, friends....DJ Caterina is moving on to another blog - Audio Rumble.

Audio Rumble will be a place to catalog the many, many Tommy Conwell and Tommy Conwell-related items I own.

Who knows, maybe someday I can show all this stuff off on Antiques Road Show!

Back in the good ol' days of Hollywood, the people who pursued movie stardom were individuals who had something to say -- not just empty, pretty shells waiting for a script to appear. Case in point: Richard Burton.

In a 1974 interview with Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune creator/gazillionaire Merv Griffin, the hard-drinking, chain-smoking Welshman responds to a comment about man being on the moon. Burton sniffs:

The least important thing we've done...in the last 100 years is to get a man on the moon. The idiots who went up there had no knowledge or no idea or no purpose. They were just simply automatons.

You don't hear that everyday about astronauts, huh?

Country Music Wanes

Radio promoters are lamenting that the Southwest -- Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas -- once known as the best place to break country music, is now the last place likely to break a new act or get airplay on a new single.

According to a senior VP of promotion at Warner Bros. Nashville, "...if you're not George Strait, the Southwest is absolutely the hardest place to start any record, whether it's an established act or a new artist."

That's why he's known as King George, ya'll.

Music and the Brain

A concert at the Boston Symphony Orchestra concert tonight will feature Keith Lockhart doing a lot more than conducting. He’ll be a human test subject, wearing special sensors for a medical research project.

Researchers from McGill University are studying how music affects the human brain.So during Saturday’s concert, Lockhart has agreed to be connected to electrodes inside a special jacket. The sensors will collect information on his heart rate, muscles activity, and other psychological responses.

Five members of the orchestra, and several dozen audience members will also be wearing the electrode-filled jackets.

DJ Caterina would have loved a trip to Boston for this experiment.

This evening at the Jonsson Performance Hall at UT-D, Moreno played music by composers Albéniz, Tárrega, Turina, Sor and Manuel de Falla.

After a concert in Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, the American Journal of Classical Guitar wrote:

Bob Weinstock, who released some of the seminal jazz recordings of the 1950s on his independent Prestige label, died Jan. 14 of complications of diabetes at a hospice in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 77.

Smitten by jazz at an early age, Mr. Weinstock had parlayed a family loan into a privately owned record company by the time he was 20. Mr. Weinstock recorded many of the most important musicians of the modern jazz era, including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, and the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Mr. Weinstock produced more than 1,000 recordings in 23 years at the helm of Prestige before he sold the company in 1972. After retiring to Florida, Mt. Weinstock made a brief return to record producing with a small record label in the 1990s. In a 1995 interview with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Mr. Weinstock recalled that when he was 8, he and his father bought a stack of jazz records for 9 cents apiece.

The best weekend -- EVER!

This weekend I went to Philadelphia to see my favorite band, Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers. They reunited for the closing of the Stone Balloon, a club in Delaware that has featured great musical acts over the last 30 years like The Ramones, Metallica, Bruce Springsteen, and Bonnie Raitt.

As soon as I got my rental car and settled in my hotel room that Saturday morning, my first order of business was to drive 40 minutes to Delaware. Since I had never traveled to this part of the country, I wanted to do a "dry-run" drive for getting to the concert later. Once I found the club, I decided to look for a box office so that I could get my ticket early, in case they sold out later. (Even though I paid for my ticket online, I was worried that if the place got packed, I wouldn’t get in.) I went around the back and saw some guys standing around the back door. I asked if any of them worked at the club. In the conversation, I mentioned that I had just taken a flight in from Dallas, when one of the guys came forward and said, “Well, come on in to the club – I’m sure we can find someone to help you.”

This guy was Chris Day, guitarist for the Young Rumblers. I didn't realize it was him until he told me his first name. As it turns out, the Rumblers were getting ready for their rehearsal -- and there was my guitar idol onstage -- Tommy Conwell! Chris said that he didn’t see a problem with me being there since I had come a long way for the concert.

I found an inconspicuous corner to watch the guys set up onstage. I was so excited to be there! One of the crew started chatting me up about my trip -- when Tommy walked by, the guy said “Hey Tommy! This girl came all the way from Dallas to see you.” He gave me a big hug... (That's Tommy --- always caring for his fans. A genuinely good guy.)
Right before rehearsal, Tommy called me over and told me to take the stairs on the side to get on the stage. He then introduced me to each of the Young Rumblers as the girl who was a fan and came all the way from Dallas to see their show for the first time ever. I was so honored. Chris Day told Tommy that he was the one who let me in the club!

The band kicked off rehearsal with Here I Come – also one of the opening songs at the concert. The band gave me permission to take pictures for the entire rehearsal. It was so great to hear all my favorite Rumblers songs – and I knew the words to every song they rehearsed – even Space Cowboy! Tommy forgot the lyrics to the last part of If We Never Meet Again, and said “I’ll remember it by tonight.” Chris Day said, “Just watch Catherine!”

The concert later on in the evening was absolutely incredible. It was so great to be there, to share in the history of the event, and to see the last concert at The Stone Balloon with Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers.

Although the reunion of the Young Rumblers was an event unto itself, Tommy made sure that the emphasis was on everyone realizing that it would be the last night for music at The Stone Balloon. One of the more poignant events of the evening was when he shared his memories of all the people who played there, including how he had once sat outside listening to music when he was too young to get in. He ended each of his tributes and remembrances with a thoughtful “Cheers, cheers…”

The Stone Balloon ended its last show with a class act, indeed.

Power Chord Pioneer

Guitar master Link Wray - father of the power chord in rock 'n' roll who inspired such legends as Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and Pete Townsend - has died. He was 76.

Link was a rock and roll guitar player most noted for introducing a new sound for electric guitars in his major hit, the 1958 instrumental "Rumble", by Link Wray and his Ray Men.

Before "Rumble", electric guitars were used to produce clean sounds and jazz chords. Wray made a new sound by inventing fuzz-tone, adding feedback, distortion and noise. He pioneered the power chord.

The power chord - a thundering sound created by playing fifths (two notes five notes apart, often with the lower note doubled and octave above) - became a favorite among rock players.

Also was an inspiration for one of DJ Caterina's favorite bands, Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers.

I gotta hand it to John Miller...

First, he interviewed Osama Bin Laden in '98.
Then he was instrumental in giving the play-by-play with Peter Jennings the morning of 9/11.
Next he was the stud that Barbara Walters was fawning over on 20/20 at ABC News.
Moved on to be the head of Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence in Los Angeles.
Now he's the assistant director of public affairs for the FBI.

Squishy Squid Sex

PARIS (AFP) - Japanese zoologists have made the first recording of a live giant squid, one of the strangest and most elusive creatures in the world.

And now for the interesting paragraph...

In 2003, New Zealand marine biologists laid a sex trap.
They ground up some squid gonads, believing that the scent would drive male giant squids wild as the creatures migrated through New Zealand waters. The hope was that a camera would squirt out the pureed genitals and a passing squid, driven into a sexual frenzy, would then mate with the lens -- a project that, some may be relieved to hear, never came to fruition.

I met my niece today. She was born on my birthday, July 24, and she is cute as can be.

This is the first baby I have ever truly felt any maternal instinct towards.

She looked up at my brand new diamond earrings with her big, bright, 3-month old eyes and wrinkled her face into a quick grin. She's got good taste.

After nearly three months, 32 shows and a dozen Rockers not right for INXS, it was down to three finalists. And who did the band pick? No surprise, the former Elvis impersonator. Mig was too "theat-ah" and that blonde guy was just too weird.

Will this compel me to attend an INXS concert? Sadly, no. Only the reincarnation of Michael Hutchence would get me to care. And even then, people....I've got to see Tommy Conwell first!

Out of the blue, a Philly favorite is back
Frank Brown serves up new guitar-pop

For fans of longtime Philly favorites Flight of Mavis and Buzz Zeemer, listening to Frank Brown's new solo album, Out of the Blue, will be like hearing from an old friend. Brown self-deprecatingly calls it a "comfortable bunch of songs."
While it's neither as jangly as Mavis (the trio Brown started in 1988) nor as power-poppy as Zeemer (his subsequent band with Tommy Conwell), Out of the Blue is full of the easygoing, catchy melodies that have always been Brown's forte.

Throughout the '90s, Brown's bands regularly played clubs including the Pontiac and its predecessor, J.C. Dobbs, on bills with peers such as Emily Valentine, the Rolling Hayseeds, and early Marah. "That was great; much fun," Brown says. "As far as the Pontiac or Dobbs, there was a period of time when you were so used to playing those places, it was like a second home."

But around 2000, "Buzz Zeemer just came to an end," he says. "We sort of looked at each other and said let's stop for a while." And although Brown played guitar for a time with Solid for Sixty, he devoted his attention to raising his sons, now 4 and 6, and to his new career as an elementary school teacher. "As far as the music goes, I was really done," Brown says.

He continued writing and playing for his own amusement, however, and he eventually gathered some friends and recorded Out of the Blue in brief, sporadic sessions. "It's going to be a bit of the old, a bit of the new," he says of Saturday's show marking Blue's release. "I just want to make it comfortable and get back into it."

It was a fine day to bid on some jazz music history. The auction was held at Jazz at Lincoln Center -- a 128-million-dollar state of the art performance space designed especially for jazz music that was opened in Manhattan in October.
